"Positive care in hospital"

My Gran broke her hip last Friday and at 92 we, my brother (the physio), my other brother (the radiographer) and myself (the OT) were thinking 'oh bottom'. After 2 hours waiting for an ambulance (fall with no immediate health risk means she was classed as B category and the pain didn't count), she arrested in A&E (maybe the combination of morphine and diazepam didn't suit her). However I cannot fault the nurses in A&E and as we were lucky this is what matters. They spoke to her as a rational adult although she was in pain. They made sure she understood their jokes even though she is pretty deaf and treated her with absolute dignity and respect. They ensured my dad knew what was going on and why, when we weren't there to translate and moved her to the ward with ease. Peterborough Hospital is lovely and has exceeded my expectations and I say that as a health care professional working with the elderly. My only issue is that the nurses appear to be 'caring' for her too much! She may be 92, but when she says 'isn't it lovely, they wash you like a baby' you know she's becoming institutionalised. A more rehabilitation approach is essential to move people through these wards quickly, But maybe that's the OT in me coming out! Thank you.
