Having been involved in Health Service, I have seen a bit over the years. But I was yet to encounter this department. In my opinion the name of Pain Management breaches the Trades Descriptions Act. I have been awaiting an operation for complications relating to Crohn's disease and used the NHS Choose and Book system as it offered the quickest appointment. Now I know why such quick spots were available. I am often in screaming pain and in need of medication outside the domain of a GP. Anyway, I had my GP book the appointment and was looking for the symptomatic relief which was making my life an unending misery. I previously had successful results from pain clinics both at St Thomas' and Kings College Hospital, but the situation had dramatically worsenened...About a week prior to the appointment booked for 6 March (2013), I was informed that a doctor from the pain management clinic refused to see me, claiming I should only be attended to by Gastroenterology and/or Mental Health. Where the latter comes from I have no idea. No explanation was given. This decision, predication on the lunacy of some self-important quack has caused me tremendous anguish and obviously another trip to the GP to book an appointment with a hospital. I find it the height of insanity that an inner London hospital of some note condones this unscientific lunacy. That they do not understand that a patient in my condition needs palliative relief in the imperative is not only negligent in the truest sense, but lacking in awareness that these bizarre edicts are responsible forhapless patients to waste millions on useless alternative medicine. At least, in the latter scenario, there may be a placebo effect. In this scenario, it simply reinforces the reality that the professional classes within the UK feel emboldened to make even the most nauseating mistakes and express no contrition and feel no remorse. It is hoped that the number of suicide victims from those being 'Blackburned' is minimal but as this charlatan has no boundary predicated in common sense leads me to believe the number is high.
