My 9 year old son recently had his appendix removed, the staff were all great and he was dealt with speedily.

The only concern I had was that the doctors were trying to send him home less than 24 hours after his surgery, which was an open operation under full general. Fortunately the nursing staff stepped in and said he should really stay another night which I was most grateful for.

All the staff on the ward were brill with him and he especially liked all the play stuff they had (iPad, wii, DVD and great selection of board games, to name but a few). Thanks to them for making a stressful situation a lot better.

Thank you for taking the time for posting your comments on the NHS Choices website. Paediatric Surgery has progressed immensely in the past 10 years with the majority of operations that children have are being generally carried out as a day case procedure. Most children recover well after an operation and are routinely sent home. Very occasionally a child may need to stay in hospital overnight so that the nursing and medical staff can keep a watchful eye on them and allow them home the next day.

At Tameside Hospital the children’s nurses will always make sure that any child who is ready to go home will only do so when they are ready and I am glad on this occasion they were able to make sure your son was able to stay overnight. The nurses will always put the needs of children before anything and anyone else.

On a positive note I am pleased that your experience overall was a positive one and I shall ensure that the staff are made aware of your comments.
