About: Coventry And Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust / Older people's mental health

(as a relative),

In my heart of hearts I thought there was a problem and our doctor referred my husband to the Loxley Unit at Stratford upon Avon in 2010. He was initially treated for depression and for a few months suffered unpleasant reactions to the medication. During this period he received fairly regular appointments at the Unit and eventually the problems settled down.

In September 2011 he attended an appointment for neuropsychological assessment and I was quite devastated by the very poor results in certain aspects of his symptoms. He was prescribed Donepezil and was closely monitored during the initial stages of taking this medication as, once again, some time was needed until certain reactions settled down.

He now sees the consultant twice a year but on the occasions I have telephoned for advice the secretary has always ensured that a consultant telephones me back and this has been most supportive.

It is a lonely road at times as the spousal role of our marriage evolves into one of caring but I am very fortunate that he surrendered his driving licence without any problem and is now happy to come out and about with me each day.

What was good: Regular monitoring and advice in the initial stages of new medication. Support from the secretary when I had queries.

What could have been better:

Perhaps now and again, if requested, the opportunity to see the consultant separately.

A notice board giving details of the local Alzheimers Association cafe meetings in our area (Patient care) Also details of the Guidepost meetings in our county (support for carers). There are others support groups I am still learning about but we find the cafe and Guidepost meetings very friendly and informative.
