"Bad Communication"

About: West Cumberland Hospital

Anything else?

My grandson has been unable to speak properly, he is 4 years old and rapidly approaching school age. He was assigned to a speech therapist, no improvement. Then another who felt that the answer was to remove his enlarged tonsils. He attended the hospital in November 2012, and this was confirmed. Due to sleep apnea, he would need an overnight test.

My observation is this, there is a massive communication problem within the NHS. No one forwarded the request to the nurse who was responsible, who in fairness was not best pleased and acted within 24 hours. It has now been three weeks. Apparently due to staff cuts and people being off sick, up until last week no one had been available to read the results. The admin side can only be done on certain days of the week, so if the window of opportunity is missed there is a further weeks delay. Unfortunately we live at the other end of the country so are limited in our ability to act.

To sum up, there are some excellent staff within the NHS, and they are being let down by poor management and policy. Had my grandson received the correct attention, he would not have had to attend the GP three times already this year with throat infections, have anaemia and a total lack of confidence at school. This may also have a knock on effect for the rest of his life.
