My mother, close to her 100th birthday, was admitted after suffering from a stroke at home. The first good point was the speed and attention of the ambulance service, who actually took her to St George's because of their specialist neuro dept. As however there was nothing for that dept to do in her case, the more local St Peters found a bed in their stroke unit- Holly Ward where she was transferred.

The family appreciated the professional and compassionate help provided at all levels; the doctors, the nurses, the physiotherapists, the palliative specialists and all the ancilliary staff. We could not have asked for more.

In the end, there seemed to be no chance of recovery, let alone rehabilitation to her former vibrant self. The attention and sensitivity at all time in the final days leading up to her death could not have been less like the recent unhappy NHS reports elsewhere.

BTW I have marked this as Neurophysiological services which seems to me the closest thing to a stroke unit.... I am happy for this to be corrected if it's wrong
