I was rushed to hospital via ambulance around 6am on 28th December with suspected meningitis. I was in a state on confusion and very irriteable so probably was not the easiest of patients to deal with as I was pulling the nurses hair and stealing the security passes and also pulling out cannulas, this is all very out of character for me.
I had a team of approx 7 doctors and consultants treating me along with all the nurses who were all very nice, pleasant and helpful despite my behaviour. my husband tells me they acted very quickly and professionally at all times. Within the space of 2 hours I had had 4 lots of anitbiotics and steroids to control my symptoms.
At around 3pm the same day I was transfered to ITU in my own room with a nurse at this point I was still not aware of anything. I came round approx 8am the next morning and the nurse sat me up and made me comfortable and nothing seemed too much trouble. One of the consultants from A&E even came up to see how I was and was very surprised that I remembered him and that I was awake and talking, I thought that was a very lovely thing to do and something he didn't need to do.
Later the same afternoon I was transfered up to Langham ward and stayed there for ten days. The nurses were always friendly, polite, caring and professional. Helping patients wash, change or take them to the toilet despite the fact that at times resources are clearly stretched. Not only did they have to do observations, give out medication, make sure all patients were clean and comfortable, change the beds daily they also have to sort out distributing patient's breakfast, lunch and dinner.
I would say I enjoyed my stay at Colchester General hospital as far as you can enjoy being in hospital. I would highly recommend the hospital as I received the best care that I could've and all are the staff were wonderful. If not for them I may not be here now to tell the tale. So a massive THANK YOU to all the staff in A&E, ITU and on Langham ward that were involved in my care and treatment!!!
I feel people are too quick to complain to the wrong places when they don't get what they expect to get and are far too demanding. Most people would rather go running to the papers with a complaint instead of use the proper channels first to raise their complaints or concerns for the issue to be sorted.
