Anything else?
I was transferred from the A& E at the Leicester Royal Infirmy with suspected patella/ appendix issues to the Leicester general. I was checked by a few doctors who advised me that my issue could be down to an appendix problem, and that an operation would be scheduled the same day of me being admitted into the Leicester General. Through out the day I asked the nurses for an update as to when I would be admitted for the operation. None of the nurses seemed to know, I also was not advised that I was placed on an emergency list. I was also advised that surgeons only works up 9pm and any operation required past this time would likely to happen on the next day. I waited for over 15 hours for the operation and at 9pm decided I wanted to have something to eat, and at 11.20pm the nurses came to take me down to the theater for the operation. I advised them that I had eaten at 9pm and the reason why, based on the information given to me by the nurse. I was then told I would need to have the operation in the morning due to me having eaten.
I woke up in recovery at 11.30 am the following day and immediatley asked for feedback about my operation. The nurse was unable to provide any feeback because the surgeon was in another surgery. I was not provided with any feedback until the surgeon came to see me around 8.30pm. As the surgeon came I was watching a football game on my phone but was in the process of turning the phone volume down and I explain to him that it was OK to begin our conversation. The surgeon exclaimed quote “I do have a wife and children to go home too”... I expressed to the surgeon that I did not appreciate his tone or attitude. Throughout my three days stay, I felt that overall the performance of the nurses was well below patient care and attention. The main reasons are; 1) I had to wait for over one hour for some allergy medication, which I had to chase up with the doctor. 2) when I pressed the emergency buzzer it took 20 mins for a nurse to attend to me. 3) the only time I saw the nurses was either when they were giving medication or taking blood pressures. 4) the nurses were lacking in general patient care and were constantly complaining of being under staffed. 5) when I was discharged from the hospital I was not given any advice about how to take care of my wound. I am also not clear on whether I have been supplied with the correct amount of medicine as disclosed on the discharge form.
