"Tameside A&E - it is a shame that one person's attitude can let everyone down"

About: Tameside General Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

Following a Car Incident yesterday morning, we were advised by our GP to go straight to A&E due to neck and head pain. On arrival at A&E we booked in and were promptly triaged. Unfortunately, the nurse did not seem interested in anything we had to say after explaining that we had been in a car incident (I believe that she assumed we were just there for a claim and were just wasting her time - well that's what it felt like). On explaining that we had gone to our local GP, but the GP had advised that we needed to come to A&E, her prompt comment was "well that's because GP's don't give a S**T! ".

Following that, we were seen within 2.5 hrs (which was well under the 4 hours we were advised on arrival) by the fantastic Dr Long, who, following discussion about what to do if my daughter (who had also been in the car), started to show signs of neck/head/back pain, advised us that we should bring her straight to A&E to be looked at, which made me believe that what the Triage nurse had told us was untrue and that the GP had given us the correct advice (i.e. come to hospital).

Apart from the uncaring and verbally rude Triage Nurse - our trip to the hospital was excellent, we were seen well before 4 hours and the treatment received was of an excellent standard. It is a shame that one person's attitude can let everyone down.

Thank you for posting your experiences on the Patient Opinion website.

I am sorry that the attitude of one member of staff has tainted your experience, however it is pleasing to note that your care and treatment was good and provided in a timely manner.

I will ensure the A&E team are made aware of your comments.

Thank you for choosing Tameside General Hospital.

Kind regards

John Goodenough

Director of Nursing

Would you like to help the hospital to improve its services further? We are currently looking for patients and carers to become involved in a development called “Patient Stories”. We want to know more about our services from the point of view of those who received them – what was good, bad, what could be improved, what should be changed. Want to know more about what’s involved? Please contact John Goodenough, Director of Nursing at
