"a and e"

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital

Anything else?

This is the second time i have had to go to a/e after seeing a doctor at west call.

Very long wait and needed to be seen by a nurse even though seen by gp and spoke to surgical reg on call but sill need a nurse to acess. what a waste of time. also when being assessed it was in a corridor and asked for confidential information i n a very public space, which i refused and told by the nurse suit yourself and walk off. Rude, uncaring and breach of confidentiality and dignity. I find this hospital has no manners or respect. they forget they are there to serve and not the other way round. dont complain as it will only be lip service and total they know they give sub standard care but what can they do it is down to economics.

Response from Royal Berkshire Hospital

It is our policy that all patients are assessed on arrival by a nurse / doctor to ensure that any immediate issues can be dealt with in a timely manner. Unfortunately, the surgeons expecting you do not have an admission area, hence your need to come via the Emergency Department. We apologise that this assessment took place in a corridor; it is our normal practice that if you arrive via the waiting room you are taken to a private room for the assessment to take place and if you arrive by ambulance the consultant will assess you in a majors bay.

The matron for Urgent Care apologises that you were not given the confidentiality that you certainly deserve and she will address the attitude of the nurses as this is totally unacceptable.

Currently, the hospital is under pressure to have enough beds to manage the patient flow in an efficient manner and we are truly working on new ways of working to address this and we would like to assure you we are not just giving lip service and we take complaints very seriously. Should you wish to discuss further please do contact the matron for Urgent Care via the hospital switchboard - 0118 322 5111.
