"Stupid and more stupid"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow)

Anything else?

My husband is currently in the facility over night with kidney stones. They admitted him and then claimed they had a ‘plan’. The plan was to find the bladder scanner that had been missing for hours and then scan him. We asked them to discharge him, but they said no, and said that if we did it would be refusal of services. No matter that the meds and things that they have been giving him could be given at home instead he has to be stuck in some ward with useless nurses.

He was suppose to have a CAT in the afternoon, somehow that got canceled and rebooked for the next day.

For the late night shift change I saw some extremely disturbing behavior by the nurses. One patient asked for a bedpan and the nurse told him to wait for the next shift change! He ended up getting up and going to the loo on his own.

Then during and after the late shift change, the staff on the Ward chatted for over 15 minutes about Facebook and other stupid things while call buttons beeped and my husband was vomiting...

Then the rudest nurse I have ever met did rounds. She was rude to two other patients. Telling one patient that the man in the loo (who had been there awhile) was just fine and that the man need not concern himself. Then when the man in the loo finally came back, she as she was administering meds, she asked him if he wanted a pantcetcol. He said no thanks to which she said well then, don’t ask for one in an hour like you did last night.

When she finally came to my husband we got into an argument about how she treated other patients because she asked me to leave. Honestly, why would I want to leave him alone with someone who is going to treat others terribly? She proceeded to argue with me, and ended up asking me if I wanted her to dispense the meds to my husband in way that made me wonder if she was threatening not to... she continued to argue even when I told her I did not want to hear her explanations and I wanted her to give my husband the meds that he really needed. He was in severe pain and very nauseous. He has been unable to keep much down or urinate. And the last meds that she gave him, were oral/ All the other staff gave him everything though his port. I swear if I come in tomorrow and he is on an IV because he did not keep anything down tonight because of her.... let’s hope it does not happen.

I would like to give a shout out to one paticulr member os staff and the nurse and staff before the late shft. They were wonderful. The member of staff fixed my husband a late sandwich and they were constantly around and they knew when he threw up. then at shift change everyone lost their brains I guess.

At The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust we strive to provide excellent care and to meet the needs and expectations of all of our patients.

We have clearly not done that here and there are a number of issues which we would be extremely keen to follow up on. In order to do that, we will need your help.

With that in mind, could I ask that you contact us as soon as possible with further details of what has happened. We will do our utmost to ensure this is followed up and any concerns you have are resolved. I have advised the Director of Nursing and the Patient Experience Team of what has happened and they are ready to take your call.

Our number is 01279 827084.
