"No Specialists available on the Weekend!"

About: Frenchay Hospital

Anything else?

My husband was admitted to Frenchay hospital with concussion after a bike accident on Friday I am disgusted with the fact that he has to wait until Monday to be seen by a specialist when his confusion is causing concern! I am very upset with this lack of care.

I have a positive note and that is all the nursing staff we have dealt with have been absolutely lovely, helpful and caring!

Dear Angry Wife – I am very sorry that you feel your husband was not properly cared for over the weekend after he was admitted to hospital on Friday.

The process would be that an initial assessment is made when a patient is first admitted, and this will determine if they needed to be seen immediately, or if it is correct to make observations over the weekend in readiness for an assessment by a consultant on the Monday. If a patient’s condition indicates more urgent action is suddenly required, then the on-call consultant neurologist or appropriate specialist, would be called. I am sorry if this was not properly explained to you, or if you were not given suitable reassurance as to your husband’s condition at what is obviously a very worrying time. Unfortunately I do not have his details and so I cannot comment further, but if you would like the complaints department to investigate your husband’s care plan we would be happy to do so. To enable us to take forward the investigation please complete the form on the North Bristol Trust Website - the link is shown below. To do this we will need your husband’s consent so you may wish to wait to until he is feeling much better if you wish to take the matter further.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to post your views on the NHS Choices website. I hope that your husband receives appropriate care and makes a quick and full recovery.

Kind Regards –

Steve Sykes
