"Concerned about the care of my father"

My Father is presently in Woodland ward in the East Surrey Hospital, due to a urine/bladder problem which is causing blood loss and urine blockages.

He has been in twice for the same reason, once before Christmas when he blocked up and was taken in. He was flushed out and discharged with promise of a scan and procedure to try to find a solution.

He received an outpatient appointment for January but had to be rushed back in before that with a further blockage and a lot of blood in his urine. Again flushed out, but because of the blood in urine couldn't have the procedure, and promised another Bladder procedure a few days later when the flushing would allow them to see clearly in the bladder.

The first day came and went 'when his bladder was clear', and on the next available da they said couldn't do the procedure because of the tablets he was taking. Now the Hosp have been giving the tablets to him so the excuse doesn't make sense.

He is now on the Monday evening again having problems with a significant amount of blood in his urine and 500ml still in his bladder after trying to go to the toilet normally and not being able to pass it. When I left the hospital they were about to put in a catheter to again flush.

Later that evening I get a call from my father saying that they couldn't get the catheter in and they called a doctor to do it. The doctor refused to put it in and told my father he was not blocked and cannot stay in the hospital and must wait for an outpatients appointment and be discharged. As you can imagine my father is completely beside himself with worry that he is not being given the appropriate care or treatment and is being ignored because of his age.

I share that and am appalled that this is happening to him.

have voiced our concerns over his treatment several times and again earlier this afternoon with a Junior Doctor who promised to try to sort these problems out. Admittedly they would not have had time before this other doctor visited this evening and proved our concerns are valid.

I am going to visit the Woodland Ward tomorrow morning and try to further discuss what's going on with the doctors when they visit. But I am not at all convinced that any reasonable outcome will happen.

Due to these problems I think it would be in all our interests to have him transferred to another hospital where he can receive proper care and proper treatment for his condition.

Now on top of all this the communications between the many Doctors over his problem are non-existent, with many different Doctors all who seem to be the key person in charge, and all whom have different opinions about his condition but nobody is taking responsibility to find the cause. Some want him out and without solving the problem and a few think he should stay in until they sought out the cause.

The latter is a must but he and us 'Son and Daughter' are being given conflicting reports all of the time and nearly everyday he is being told he is going to be discharged by yet another different Doctor despite us being told to the contrary.

He is 90 years old but a fit 90 year old who is very embarrassed about his condition and very frustrated and stressed and confused about his treatment. He also lives at home alone and will not let us know when he has a problem. It was only sheer luck that we visited him to find him in a stressed state and had to take him back to hospital urgently, and go through the A&E route yet again.

Very concerned and need an urgent reply with action.

I am sorry to read about your concerns over your father's care. I believe Abhay Rane, Clinical Professor of Urology, has since spoken to you and your sister about your fathers care and I hope that you feel confident that your father is receiving the correct care for his condition. I am very sorry things were not explained to you sooner, as I understand such a lack of communication - or little bits of communication with lots of different people - leads to worry and frustration.

I believe your father was staying in as an inpatient until today when his cystoscopy is scheduled. I hope he is feeling better soon.
