What could be improved
I visited A/E with my daughter Katharine on 27/12/2013, am.10 years ago she had a serious DVT with 2 pulmonary embolii. She was concerned she had developed a further DVT as she was in extreme pain from her back, her groin , down the left thigh to her knee with numbness and tingling over her knee and tendernesswhich could be tracked down her outside of her leg.; this was similar to when she had the previous DVT .This was excluded as the D-dimer test was negative. The Dr carried out a cursory examination; he did no neurological tests, despite the numbness and tingling, and did not test her reflexes. She had to ask for analgesia. No other treatment or referral was suggested, he did mention muscular skeletal. The analgesia was Codeine phos 60mgs and diclofenic ,and Katherine was sent hom.,she was in such pain she needed a wheel chair to get to the pharmacy; once home she was still in agony, the medication didn't resolve the pain. She finally managed to see her GP 28th Dec. as an urgent appt who, after a thorough examination, identified the problem and felt a physio assessment and therapy was needed . As there is a waiting list so we decided to go privately to get an an early appointment and was seen later that morning. The physio found only slight reflexes on left leg, tingling over knee, tendernes outside of leg indicating radiculopathy with a probable prolapsed disc 3/4 lumbar vertebrae My daughter came home on crutches , with a TENS machine and proper advice on pain management. Katherine will need intensive physiotherapy and is likely to need further investigations and surgery. My daughter is a single Mum, and a full time social work student in her final year. We cannot afford private treatment, Salford Royal has really let her down , we would find it acceptable if the doctor had said he didn't know what the problem was but he would refer her for an OPD appointment for further investigations. He just wasn't that interested.
