What could be improved
Kindness, compassion and basic nursing care to older patients who require help and support. My father was admitted as an emergency to urology services - these are some of his experiences. Nurses put paperwork above helping a patient who needed assistance with toileting needs. He felt that at night he should not ask for assistance and he observed others getting short shrift if they did. He was spoken to sharply many times. During the norovirus outbreak - he was left without visitors for nearly a week due to the ward being closed. Getting any information was exceptionally difficult due to ' patient confidentiality ' . My father for the first time ever felt frightened and vulnerable in hospital and was without the support of family to act as his advocate. He feels that older people with greater needs and slower mobility are seen as difficult patients and do not receive the care they should rightly have. My father is an intelligent and articulate man but came home rail, feeling vulnerable and frightened that he may have to return to a place where he would be treated in a way where dignity and compassion were missing. I have also placed this story on patient opinion
"lack of kindness, compassion and dignity towards..."
