What I liked

The prompt and professional work of the Macmillan nurses, and those who work around them. In general the teams in Waddington and Lancaster Wards were attentive however I have found it necessary to remind nurses and Jnr Drs of the basics of hygiene and treatments.

My elderly mother has been in and out of hospital since January 2012 and has been in various wards up until now, Dec 2012

What could be improved

Jan/Feb Attitude of staff in Marshall was total bad. Cleanliness throughout stay was terrible and had to be reported on more than one occasion. This was not due to staff shortages. Information on patients was definatly not passed from one team to another on changeover. Replacement nurses were very much in the dark and resented by other nurses.

Lancaster Ward clean however attention needs to be placed on single rooms which seem to get just a 'quick' wipe over !

Waddington Ward professional but again attention at the passing of information between teams. I had to point out to Jnr Drs that my mother hadn't eaten for two days due to various RDVs in the hospital for Xrays ect. Idem for washing, my mother had MRSA and hadn't been washed for two days.

I have a medical background and work in a hospital in France. It would seem that a large number of staff in Lincoln hospital have an attitude problem. The management and senior staff seem to lack attention to detail and are afraid to correct staff problems and I have had to remind all levels of staff of many errors, the most important, Hygiene and the passing of information about patients from one team to another. Often items get forgotten.

Anything else?

I am shocked at the number of people smoking at the entrance of the hospital, public and patients alike and the mess it makes. This is not a good image when entering the building. Another area should be given which is well away from the entrance.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback on your experience. I have discussed with the team involved and be asked to post this reply on their behalf: I am very sorry that the experience both you and your Mother had whilst on the wards at LCH was not the standard expected. The wards work hard to ensure cleanliness in each area and take pride in ensuring the wards are clean and tidy. We have random 'auditrac' audits which assess the wards standard of cleanliness in great detail. The staff are keen for these to show that they are improving each month. The fact that the areas you visited were below this standard will disappoint the staff. However, they will use your comments constructively to ensure they improve in the areas required.

There is a clear handover pathway tool which the ward staff used. Within the medical wards we use 'Plan for every patient', which supports a very robust handover from one shift to the other. This works particularly well on Lancaster Ward. The aim is to roll this out to the surgical wards over the next year. I'm sorry that you felt that information was not passed to the next shift. We will of course be reflecting this back to the wards to remind them of the importance of robust handovers and ensuring all information is given to ensure a seamless transfer of care.

I was disappointed that you felt that the staff attitude was poor and a reluctance to tackle issues. We do not expect to see poor attitudes of staff on wards, I can reassure you that we will tackle this once aware. We again, have a robust plan to support staff and tackle poor performance, ensuring staff are managed through a competency based framework to ensure high quality standards of care.

I agree that smoking in the main entrance of the Hospital is unpleasant and gives a poor impression. There are measures being taken to resolve this, with designated smoking areas away from main entrances.
