"Shocking patient care"

About: University College Hospital

What could be improved

I visited this hospital as my husband was in for Day Surgery. He was pressurised into leaving, even though he hadn't yet been out of his bed since his operation. Eventually, after being given morphine for the pain he was suffering, he was told he had to wait for me in the discharge room, until I had finished work at 3:15.

His doctors said he would need waterproof protecting padding for him wound to enable him to shower, but the staff were so eager to 'kick him out' that they failed to provide him with this.

This is the second time i have been pressurised into leaving work in order to collect my husband, the previous time i arrived at 3:30 after he had been asked all day what time i would be arriving, only for us to have to wait until 7pm for his medications!

Patient care at this hospital in my experience leaves an awful lot to be desired.

Many thanks for taking the time to comment about your experience at UCLH. We are sorry to hear that your husband felt pressured to leave the hospital before he was ready and that this adversely impacted on your working day. With the limited amount of information given it has not been possible to identify those involved in your husband’s care. However, all surgical patients should be given adequate time to recover and offered comprehensive advice about managing at home before they are discharged. We are extremely sorry if this was not your experience. If you would like your concerns looked into in more detail, please contact our complaints department.
