"Excellent caring staff that made my hospital stay..."

About: St James's University Hospital

What I liked

re - Ward 95 and 88 -

The quality and commitment of the staff was fantastic , My dad felt that he had been really cared for, and whenever we had questions or needed help it was always forthcoming in a timely way. 10 out of 10!

The specialist Lymphoma specialist nurses were amazing and the help and support dad and the rest of the family received (even via email) was exemplary, the team based approach worked well and if there were questions after the consultant rounds the nurses always hung back to answer any further questions we may have.

Cleaning happened daily and they were always polite.

The surroundings on both wards were good including the day rooms and toilets.

What could be improved

The food was OK, bearing in mind the challenges of delivering food within the hospital environment. It is a shame that when warm food is served it is on a cold plate. By the time you've finished your soup the main course is quite cold. One suggestion would be to try and warm the plates and then cover them to help keep them warm? The quantity of food offered was generous though.

The charges for the use of the bedside phone and the TV was significant especially if you are in the hospital for a significant time like in my dads case. Myself and my sister are both based in Australia so to phone the bedside charges were too expensive. Ideally we would have like to have used Skype to call dad, dad has his own computer that he could have used although there was no free WIFI available in the hospital. For family and friends who are unable to visit due to distance or have a cold or virus and are unable to attend then the ability to be able to see you're loved one via Skype would be a fantastic? and good for patient moral.

Mobile phone reception was often difficult at times.

Anything else?

The clinical treatment that my father received from his consultant's team was excellent. The doctors in the majority always had a good bedside manner and when the time came to talk about palliation and resuscitation orders it was handled with great sensitivity.

We were always involved in discussions about treatment and dads views were always sourced before deriving a final treatment plan.

Thanks you to eveyone
