"I found the whole experience to be demoralising..."

About: Leicester Royal Infirmary

Anything else?

I went with my mother-in-law to your eye surgery dept on wednesday to say that your waiting times are abmysmal is an understatement. plus the fact that these poor people have to sit in a room ful of perfect strangers and not be allowed to have their family or someone that they know supporting them. Most of these patients that are being seen now have all contributed to the nhs through their working lives and should not be subjected to a 6 hr wait for their treatment .I fully appreicate that there are major cuts occuring but your hospital seems to be making hardships on the patients.

Response from Leicester Royal Infirmary

I am sorry your experience was not what you expected but thank you for your feedback, this will help us to make the right improvements going forward

Ophthalmology is a very busy department with a high number of referrals and we recognise that this impacts on waiting times. Whenever possible we try to inform all of our patients regarding the details of their treatment and waiting times implications.

We recognise that some of our patient areas are not big enough to incorporate relatives as well and this unfortunately remains a constraint for the near future.

However Ophthalmology has had a series of investments made to improve the daycase facility and some of the outpatient areas and this work is coming to a close. This will significantly improve the environment for some patients. We are also working with our partners in health to explore opportunities to provide some ophthalmology services in a different setting to make access and waiting times much better.

Patients are asked to attend for their procedure a little earlier than their scheduled procedure time to enable the Drs to make sure that they are still able to proceed and that there has been no significant issue that may alter the planned procedure. This unfortunately can add delay to a patients wait. Our intention is to review this process in light of the new day case facility with a view to reducing wait times where possible. Unfortunately emergency surgery will always take a precedence and this will inevitably cause delays on occasions.
