I had suspected pre-eclampsia at just under 36 weeks pregnant; a midwife visited me at home and sent me straight to the antenatal day assessment unit.
The staff in the unit were immensely supportive, calm, informative (not patronising at all which I really appreciated), and efficient. I returned to the unit every couple of days until I was eventually induced.
During an extremely fast labour (2.5 hours!) a lot of doctors, midwives, students and so on had to come in and out of the room, particularly as there was an emergency situation in the labour suite, but everybody was very respectful and treated me very patiently.
Despite the fact that my blood pressure was dangerously high, they prepped me for an emergency c-section (which I happily escaped) and monitored me with confidence, and I felt at every step that I was in safe hands so never felt panicked.
When I got back to the ward (a split pre/post natal ward) many of the midwives I had met over the past week or two visited to congratulate me; it was wonderful as I felt so supported, and it was so nice to see everyone after such a frightening day. It was great to feel like a person rather than 'another patient' especially in such an exceptionally busy hospital.
