"lack of communication between staff and surgeons on Gynaecology ward"

About: Good Hope Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I went for the draining of a Barthoins Cystitis. I was told on the Monday that I needed to stay in and they would operate that day if they could get me in. I got given a bed, and then I was told to go home. The following day I was told to come back at 8am ready for my op again. It got to 8pm on the night and I was told it was cancelled. So after starving myself all day I had a drink and some toast, then 20 minutes later I was told theatre was ready for me. By then it was too late, I'd eaten. I then went down to theatre the following day.

After my op I was told I was packed inside and a nurse would have to get it out. When the nurse and doctor looked at me below they said there was no packing and not to worry but at that point I did because I do remember the surgeon saying I was packed. I was worried that the lump was still there.

I was told to stay in the night again and see how I was in the morning. During the evening, a nurse came and said I've got to change your packing. I told her the doctors and nurse had examined me and told me I have no packing. She frowned and said that I had. She did find the packing and took it out. If the doctor or nurse had checked properly, I wouldn't have had to stay in another night.

Overall experience of the hospital is that I feel there was a lack of communication between staff and surgeons. I cannot fault the friendliness of all the ward 2 staff on gynaecology. They were fab but it was a shame that the communication was so bad. It was very stressful.

Dear Maestro637

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at Good Hope Hospital. I am sorry to hear that you feel that the communication between the staff was poor and that this had a negative impact on your experience and resulted in an addition night in hospital. I will highlight your comments at the next team meeting, and we will discuss how we could have improved how we communicated with you and reduce the confusion. We continually strive to improve our services and your comments will help us to do this.

Thank you for letting us know that you felt that the staff on ward 2 were friendly. It is always good to hear what we do well. I will ensure that the ward 2 staff are aware of your comments, and I am sure that they will be very pleased that you thought that they were 'fab'.

Should you wish to discuss your experience further, please contact me via the patient services team.

Best wishes

Michelle Errington
