"Maternity unit can not cope with the demand and..."

About: Northwick Park Hospital

What I liked

I liked the help from some of the staff about breast feeding.

What could be improved

When I was 41 weeks pregnant to my first baby my water broke, but my labour didn't progress as it should have done and according to the information given to us during the antenatal classes I was meant to be induced within 24 hours. But due to lack of space in the delivery suite, I was not induced on time and after 45 hours me and my baby caught infections. The midwifes at night time didn't understand the signs of my infection and after 45 hours I had to have an emergency c section as my baby's heart beat was too high. Due to my baby's infection we stayed in the hospital for 7 days on antibiotics. This has caused huge upset to me and my husband. We were not given clear information about when we could go home and why we couldn't until the last day. We were not given the option to go to another hospital where I could have been induced when there was no space for me during my labour. Northwick Park hospital does not have the capacity to deliver all the babies in the area safely and there are proposals to add Ealing's maternity unit to this hospital. I do not understand the logic behind this and I will never recommend maternity unit of this hospital to any pregnant women.

Anything else?

At night time there are not enough mid wives to help new mums and they expect you to get up and lift your child on your own after 12 hours of having a c section operation.
