"Made to feel like a burden to staff"

About: Darent Valley Hospital

What could be improved

It seemed staff were missing a very vital ingredient; people skills. having had the bennifit of experiencing private and nhs care, I found there to be only one major difference-people skills. I don't know why there's a difference, I only know there is. As a patient, I want you to know that I'm asking a question for a reason. I want you to understand my personal situation and respond to me and not my symptoms. Hospital is a place for treatment not rest or recovery, hospice is a place to rest and recover. I come to be treated yet your happy to keep me in a bed for 3 days and treat nothing but look down at me when I ask an update. Hospitals complain there's never any beds but I could have given mine up days ago had you only used my time wisely by treating me instead of making excuses. Waiting 3 days for a scan because other priorities are coming through A&E is not an acceptable excuse to someone who themselves was referred via A&E, and whom has 2 infant children awaiting a parents return, not forgetting a very expensive planned holiday only a week away which lays heavily on the results to decide if I can go or if I have to shatter my year long dream as well as the friends and children travelling with me. Treat the patient, not the illness.

I am very sorry indeed that you did not feel staff were kind or responsive during your stay. I am also very sorry for the lack of speedy efficiency in looking after you - you are quite right, hospital beds are very precious and we should not keep a patient in hospital without a good reason. Please accept my apologies for such an unsatisfactory hospital stay.

I will pass your comments on to the respiratory team so that they can reflect on your experience. I would like to investigate the circumstances of your stay with us in more detail. If you would like to contact me direct, so I can investigate further, please do so using the contact details below.

Many thanks for your feedback, it is always helpful to know where we can improve.

With best wishes,

Jenny Kay
