My mother is a retired health professional in her early nineties. She had a minor fall in August when she was a bit confused and dizzy with a urine infection. She went into Elliot Ward in Musgrove Park Hospital to get her antibiotics sorted out.
She had been there for nearly a week when she had a fall in the hospital and had a very bad fracture of her arm.
I was very disappointed that this was allowed to happen. There was a notice by her bed saying that she was at risk of falling, but she had been allowed to walk around the ward (looking for her ‘dog’).
She was also not given enough to drink. They put a drip in her arm in the end as she got so dehydrated.
The individual staff were very nice and pleasant - when you could get hold of them. But they were very busy. On one visit I had to ask for painkillers for her but the nurses said they were very busy as it was during a handover. They said they would come back later, but they didn’t. I went back later on as she was in so much pain. I said that I would give her the painkillers myself, if only they would give them to me. The nurses then brought them to her.
My mother has now been discharged and has had to be admitted to a home. She was independent and living in her own home. Now she is in a wheelchair, unable to cope and is in terrible pain. She ended up coming out of hospital in a far worse state than when she went in.
