(as the patient),

I last visited a GP at the end of July and was prescribed medication for my condition.

I was asked by the doctor to see him in two months time.

On last week I visited the health centre to book an appoint for the following week.

I was told by the receptionist that the first available appointment would be in mid October. I have booked this but am not happy that I cannot see see the doctor for nearly four weeks.

I was offered to attend a walk in clinic, but there is no guarantee that I would be able to see the same doctor.

I hope this is not typical of the NHS in general.

There are 7 GPs at Lerwick Health Centre, who not only provide services to the Health Centre but also cover other health duties, for instance in the hospital. This means that it is not always possible to see the GP of your choice immediately as pre booked appointments are booked quickly. With regard to the walk in clinic, patients can request a certain GP and so long as that individual is working that day, the staff do their best to get you seen by the GP of your choice.

I am sorry that on this occasion you were not able to see the GP of your choice. There will always be a GP available to see you in an emergency and we will always try to enable patients to see the GP of their choice.
