"Nice friendly staff on the outlook but don't care..."

About: John Radcliffe Hospital

What I liked

Staff were very friendly. Doctors, nurses and all other staff were very friendly smiling people and made us feel good inspite of our tension about my boy's operation. Night nurses were prompt and did their work very well. Surgical staff explained everything very well both to parents and patient. They checked on patient untill we were in hospital very well.

What could be improved

We were asked to come by 7:30 but we had to wait till 1:30 for the procedure to begin. I understand there were other kids younger than my son but they could have given us some hint about when it will start.

My son's surgeon spoke to us around 5:45 after operation and he was brought in to the ward around 6:30 and when he asked for something to eat he was given a chicken sandwich by his nurse which made him sick and worse. Next morning doc said only soft food but still we kept getting all this food. Food should be given according to patients need and with doctors approval.

Doc asked the drain to be taken off in the morning and came back in the evening to find it still and he went to speak to nurse after asking me why it was still there! No cordination between staff, nurses dont follow what doc says but do their own!

His next appointment with surgical staff is in nov. After 3 months of surgery! Why such a long wait?

Anything else?

He has developed urinary infection because of cathetor and as no antibiotics was given when we came home. After several calls one of surgical staff spoke and asked us to go to GP. Even though GP prescribed antibiotics he indicated we should meet his surgical staff in JR hospital but from past 2 days I am unable to contact them, several messages to ward and ped urology dept hasn,t helped. No one has called me back.

I don't understand why doctors dont want to check on how patients are doing after surgery. Why they dont want to check how the wound is healing! Nearly 5 inch incision on a 8year old boy doesn't need any after care?
