"Made to feel bad after breast cancer scare"

About: Derriford Hospital / General medicine

(as the patient),

I had cause to be referred to the breast cancer clinic. The nurses were lovely, very calm, reassuring etc.

However, when I went to see the Doctor I was left feeling stupid, awkward and uncomfortable, they passed me onto another doctor who along with a nurse performed an ultrasound and biopsy of my breast, both of whom again were reassuring, put me at my ease and were very lovely.

I was then sent back to the original doctor, who told me in so many words that there was nothing wrong with me and I was time wasting. They however did tell me that someone would call with the results in 2 weeks or so, even though they would be telling me it was nothing.

I waited 3 weeks and had heard nothing, so I called the clinic, I spoke to 4 different receptionists/administrators before finally being put through to this doctor's secretary, who went to speak to them, she came back on the phone and informed me that they had given her permission to tell me that "like they already told me, there wasn't anything there, just a cyst".

The entire experience left me feeling like an idiot, like I was a bad person for daring to check if I had breast cancer or not. If I was to be faced with this specific doctor again, I would certainly think twice before having any suspect lumps checked out. However, I can't fault the nursing staff.
