"There was no feeling of anyone caring."

About: The Great Western Hospital

What I liked

Past experience of my son entering same A&E facility with a concussion injury. Care was excellent then.

What could be improved

Qualified inspection of person with concussion and possibly broken bones.

Offer of pain relief to confused patient.

Comparison to previous experience with my child in past shows tremendous difference in care offered.

Anything else?

In a visit to A &e after a bike accident, with my husband who had concussion and possible broken ribs. He was extremely grazed and bloody on both arms and legs of his right hand side.

The overwhelming felling of our visit was one of apathy,my husband was not offered pain relief until he was seen by a second nurse over an hour into our visit. Whilst the initial nurse said a check on husbands head injury might be done, it was not. He was left to sit in reception very dirty and bleeding. While i can appreciate they do not have time to clean him I would have done it myself while we waited to see a doctor.

After nearly two hours waiting my husband began to fell more lucid and decided to discharge himself. This, ironically, produced the quickest response of the evening with the second nurse we saw giving us a discharge form and head injury sheet. We were left with the impression that they were quite happy for a person that came in after suffering a blow to the head and possible broken bones just to walk out without at least being checked over by a doctor.
