"Inadequate treatment of our son at KMH"

About: King's Mill Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

My 12 year old son fell from a 1 and half meter height, knocking out his 2 front teeth. Placing the teeth in a glass of milk my husband and I rushed him to A&E. Although there was a long queue at reception, when other patients saw his injuries we were ushered to the front of the queue.

The receptionist was very nice and assured us although there was a large number of people waiting to be seen, we would be priority.

An hour later my son was triaged and then seen by a doctor yet another hour later. We were then informed that Maxi Facial do not work nights at Kings Mill and he would probably be transfered by ambulance to a different hospital.

After yet another hours wait he was transferred to QMC. We were seen immediately and advised that because of the length of time between his teeth being knocked out and their replacement at 12 midnight, there was little if any chance that they would re-implant. We were told that he would have to have extensive dental treatment, perhaps even re-extraction.

Myself and my husband find it incomprehensable that knowing they had no Maxi Facial, and seeing the extent of his injuries did not send him straight to another hospital, where he would have had more chance of saving his teeth.

I am sorry to say that from now on Kings Mill will be our last choice hospital, we will use Calow instead.
