What I liked
I was referred by my GP to the Dermatology department due to having a suspected carcinoma on my ear. The Assistant Specialist I saw quickly confirmed the diagnosis and advised that although it was a form of skin cancer, it was not serious. I was put very much at my ease and the treatment (surgical removal) was clearly explained. I was told that the waiting period could be six to eight weeks but within a couple of weeks I received a telephone call advising that a cancellation had come through and offered an appointment for the following day.
The appointment was bang on time, as was the original one, and half an hour later, I left with the carcinama removed. The specialist and her team were extremely professional and at the same time caring. Despite the fact that a good segment of my outer ear was removed, she took particular care to ensure that was not done in an unsightly way. it was clear that they were a well oiled team who worked very well together.
I subsequently received a letter confirming the diagnosis and that it had been fully fremoved
I was particularly impressed by the how quickly I was seen and then treated. The fact that each appointment was spot on time (there is nothing worse than hanging around in a hospital waiting room). I was very happy with the specialist and her team and consider that this was the NHS at its best and how it should be.
What could be improved
The only other comment I would make is that if there was soothing background music, it would be a distraction whilst being operated on.
"What the NHS is renowned for"
