"Is the wonderful treatment at the Vikki Atkins..."

About: Queen Elizabeth I I Hospital (Welwyn Garden City)

What I liked

The experience of my follow-up care at the Vikki Atkins Breast Unit by my consultant and his team has been first class in every respect. This continues to be the case, so I was dismayed and frankly horrified, to learn at my last visit that it's future is under serious threat. The unit is an asset it is to those of us who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Anything else?

This unit provides an efficient and invaluble service, which cannot be replicated by merely integrating the consultation rooms into the general outpatients dept and having the mammograms etc performed in the general x-ray dept, which seems to be an option for the future - infact putting the service available to patients back 10yrs to the time before the Unit was established. This is something I feel very strongly about, and intend to make as many people aware of this situation as I can. This seems to be a very short sighted decision to save money in the short term while sacrificing a much valued asset to breast cancer patients in Herts.

We're not sure where this information has come from. Our colleagues at NHS Hertfordshire, who are constructing the New QEII Hospital due to open during 2014, are on public record stating that the Vicki Adkins unit will continue to be located within the new hospital. That has not changed.
