"Concern about culture of maternity dept at Oldham Hospital"

About: Royal Oldham Hospital / Maternity

(as a friend),

I first visited the maternity ward at Oldham 15 years ago and found a significant number of staff to be quite rude and abrupt. I noticed that their attitude problem was most noticeable when dealing with Asian patients and their family.

I had hoped that things would have changed over the years especially after the Channel 4 documentary but subsequent visits (approx once every three years with latest visit today) showed me very clearly that things haven't changed at all. It's like the culture in the maternity ward for some staff to be rude and have more of an attitude when dealing with Asian patients.

This attitude is renowned by the Asian community - friends and family and colleagues all report similar experiences. Even some of my white friends comment on the attitude some staff have towards Asian and black people.

It's shocking that a hospital set in a town that has a significant proportion of BME population should apparently be well known for a discriminatory attitude and some staff be allowed to continue to behave like this. Come on Oldham Hospital, clean up your act - its disgusting that the Asian community have to accept this conduct from some of your staff.
