"Questions following day surgery"

After the operation the surgeon came to explain the findings of the surgical exploration I had recently. However, even though I may have been half awake, I was still under the anaesthetics and have no recollection at all of what he said.

As no family members are allowed to stay with the patient there was no one that could ask any relevant questions.

Later a very nice nurse tried to explain to me what had happened and gave me a copy of the discharge summary. With that information I have been looking in internet trying to understand the situation only to get terrified by all the options which may probably not be applicable.

I am very sorry that you were less than happy with the information you received regarding your procedure.

We are unable to allow relatives onto the ward areas in our Day Surgery Unit so that we can maintain a small, single sex environment and uphold patient privacy. Surgeons make a judgment on the state of a patient’s awareness post-operatively when they are discussing the procedure, but this is not an exact science and if you do not remember what was said, then we got it wrong for you. In addition, surgeons would generally meet with patients to explain findings at an outpatient follow up appointment where options can be discussed in a calm, confidential environment.
