"Having a coil fitted"

About: Locala Community Partnerships CIC / Kirklees Sexual Health

(as the patient),

I've been having a coil fitted by my GP for about 20 years. It's was a process that I've endured from necessity, it was a very, quick, functional, clinical process.

Earlier this year I decided to have it removed in order to let my perimenopausal hormones do what they needed, however later regretting this went to my GP for a 'refit'. Due to the low number of fittings a year he is no longer qualified to fit them and suggested I go to family planning at Princess Royal. I dreaded it, it reminded me of being a teenager and all the uncomfortable feelings that go with teenage sex.

I found the drop in idea a bit inconvenient as it's hard to tell how long will be needed out of work.

My first appointement was a long chat and weighing and measuring and I felt very reassured by all the questions I was asked and information I was given. I was bemused as my GP hadn't done any of this for as long as I could remember.

When I went for the coil fitted I felt very looked after by the nurse and the doctor who seemed genuinely to care about my well being, insisting I take my time to get up and go and to wait in the waiting room for a while before leaving the building. I'd never felt anything like this from going to my GP.

I went for my 6 week check and spoke to the nurse about the slight ache I was having. She insisted I go back to see the doctor, to chek all is well. It feels like a Rolls Royce service in comparison to the one I've been receiving at my GP.

Although I really do find the drop in thing a pain I want share my appreciation for an invaluable service and for the very professional, human, caring and consciencious staff. Thank you very, very much

"Thank you for posting this lovely "story" of your experience which I have passed on to all the team who were really pleased to receive such positive feedback.

We always strive to provide an excellent service in terms of both clinical standards and patient experience. We are really sorry that the drop in clinic is not convenient for you, however we are currently looking at improving the way we provide both drop-in and appointment clinics at this site which should lead to improvements in the future".
