"Husbands health care in prison"

(as a relative),

I am extremely concerned about my husbands healthcare treatment in prison. Although generally I think the prison is a wonderful establishment and a good environment for him to be in, there have been lots of problems with his medical care. My husband had a heart bypass over ten years ago and has been on medication for his heart and other problems ever since. In March for some reason we were told he couln’t have his own medication, and there were problems with repeat prescriptions which meant that for over a month he was without his medication. Shortly after he resumed his medication he was admitted into hospital with a stroke.

I have tried to talk to those responsible for healthcare in the prison and have had problems getting past reception to talk to the managers and the right people who could help to sort it out. There seem to have been problems with communication because the messages that I left daily don’t seem to have got through and this matter is now being investigated but I am extremely concerned and angry that my husband does not seem to have got the daily medical attention which he needs and is his right.

After he came out of hospital there was not good follow up from the hospital so it was weeks later that anyone came from the stroke unit.

Following his stroke the prison doctor suggested splints for him, but 3 weeks later when I spoke to the Disability Officer to try to sort this out, he knew nothing about it.

I am still concerned about this my husband seem depressed and very worried about things and his general health is deteriorating.
