"There could be some improvements in mental health services in Croydon"

About: Adult mental health (Croydon) South London And Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust / Homeless mental health

(as the patient),

I've had a problem since I was 14 or 15 years old due to my experiences and I went to NHS to get checked over by my psychiatrist last year to double check something. He was ok.

I then spoke about something else which wasn't taken seriously. It may have been the example I gave and the way I came across, so no wonder it wasn't taken seriously, so I do understand why. Sometimes I can find it hard to explain what I mean or don't come up with best examples straight away, so this is hard for someone to be able to understand me fully, so not blaming him at all.

To improve: For a psychiatrist who has a patient who seems to find it a bit hard where it is difficult to understand them, it would have been good to ask "What makes you think that? "

Rather than "What's that got to do with. . . . . . . . . . ? "

The education the psychiatrist has had, may tell them it's nothing in their mind but some people have or may have got ideas from somewhere where tro them it is a problem.

After the patient answers why they think it, a good follow up question to find out more would be:

"Ok, can you think of any other examples? " This should then help to get a better understanding of what is meant. Then take it from there. Obviously there won't be anyone like me.

The patient may not have thought of the best example to begin with, especially if they find their situation or condition hard to explain, or is confused by it.

I am sure psychiatrist is fine and good and knows his stuff but I have written this because there can always be improvements.

After this, I had an annoying long wait for an assessment for CBT and then another 7 months wait for the actual thing to start. I find that the wait was the worse bit and believe that it shouldn't really take that long and unsure why it did. I was unsure whether my situation was understood properly by my CBT psychologist but she was ok - nice, friendly and tried to understand and I did like her. I guess my experience is one she has never seen before so it was new for her as everyone is unique with unique experiences and unique brains. The CBT finished about 4 months ago.
