"Doctors don't care"

About: Sternhall Lane Surgery

My wife and I have had the unfortunate experience of visiting a number of the doctors at this surgery for "consultations". They don't give advice, don't explain their decisions and show very little interest in caring for their patients. We consider their attitude to be unprofessional.

My wife is pregnant and presented with UTI symptoms recently - the doctor wouldn't even explain to her whether the antibiotic he prescribed is suitable for use during pregnancy, and appeared reluctant to order the urine test that her midwife had requested - she was told she would need to return the following week with her sample and then wait a week for results should she want to have this done.

In other instances we have had telephone consultations with doctors here and they have been impatient and rude. "Bedside manner" is absolutely non-existent.

On top of this, the surgery has posters on the wall advertising complementary vitamin D supplements for pregnant women - when my wife inquired about this with the receptionist she was advised to purchase from the pharmacy as "it's quite cheap"! No mention of her entitlement to free vitamin D supplements from pharmacies as provided by her King's College pregnancy pack.

If you have the choice, based on our experiences you should avoid this surgery at all costs.

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your recent experience at the practice.

All of our staff are trained to carry out their duties with due care and professionalism and as an organisation the Hurley Group holds the care, safety and satisfaction of its patient as its highest priority. I apologise on behalf of all concerned that this has not been your experience.

I am sorry to hear that your wife had problems when seeing a GP for a suspected UTI. The GP should have explained the use of antibiotics in pregnancy to your wife and reassured her. Often, antibiotics are prescribed in order to treat the infection quickly and the results reviewed later on to ensure the treatment has been successful. Again, this should have been explained to your wife and I am sorry if it wasn't.

The practice has a poster from Southwark regarding Vitamin D in pregnancy up in the waiting area. The poster advertises free Vitamin D from pharmacies in the local area for pregnant women. We have spoken to the reception team who are sorry that they advised your wife to purchase it. The reception team now have a list of all pharmacies in the local area that provide this service.

As this comment is anonymous I am unable to contact you to ensure that your wife's UTI has resolved however if you would like to discuss any of the above in further detail please do not hesitate to contact me.
