Exemplary Care In
Ward 4 of the RAH
I have just returned home from a three-week stint in the Royal Alexandra Hospital after suffering a stroke. When it happened I was the archetypal ‘Humpty Dumpty’, but unlike the nursery rhyme character I had no need of ‘all the King’s horses and all the King’s men’. I had the dedicated doctors and nurses of the Ward 4 Stroke Unit to put me together again and they did just that. The care and attention I received was exemplary. Even the tea lady never forgot, during my three weeks on the ward, how I liked my tea!
Forgive me if I single out one particular team for special praise. The physiotherapists, affectionately known as the ‘’physio-terrorists’, were exceptional. I have participated in team sports for a large part of my life and I recognised that these physiotherapists have formed a dedicated and professional team. I was humbled to learn that I was to be included as part of their team, and find they were willing to spend the time and energy helping
me to be the very best player I could be, so that at the end of the day, the whole team would run out winners. When they started my confidence was at rock bottom. I thought life, as I had known it was over. But this amazing team have quite literally given me my life back and I am determined to keep up their good work.
The NHS seems to me to get a disproportional amount of bad publicity. I hope that my hugely positive experience in the RAH will to some degree redress the balance.
