"Complaint about conduction of blood test"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Accident and emergency East Surrey Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

Recently I had to have a blood test following my appointment with the midwife. I felt the test was conducted in a very rough manner and I have bruises on the inside of my arm. I have had lots of blood tests but nothing like this has ever happened. I know they said they were very busy and under staffed but I still expect not to end up with a very bruised arm. I have photographic evidence of this.

As I am taking the time to write I would like to add that although some of your A & E staff who treated my daughter may have saved her life, that I do have a complaint about one indcident that happened whilst we were staying on the children's ward.

My daughter had scalding skin syndrome at 7 weeks old, as you can imagine her skin was very sore, cracked and bleeding. The consultant prescribed her skin cream during the first rounds (approx 9am). I kept chasing this up throughout the day, I even offered to go and get it from the pharmacy myself, however at 4pm I was told the paperwork had been lost. We did not receive the cream until gone 5pm which was awful given the condition of my daughter's skin.

I was made to feel like a pest for keep chasing it up and when I mentioned it the next day on the doctor's rounds, I was told "this is the NHS what do you expect?"

Later in the week the parent's bed I was using was taken away and I was told to get someone in to bring me a blow up bed as they could not guarantee it would come back. I understand that patients get priority but these two incidents have made me pay for private health cover.

I would say that some of the nurses who looked after us were brilliant and cannot be faulted for the care they delivered.

Thank you for commenting on your experience at East Surrey Hospital. Your comments (both positive and negative) will be fed back to the departments concerned and I'm sorry that there was not only a delay with your daughter's medication but that you were left without a bed to sleep on during her stay.

I'm not sure from your comments whether it was a midwife or our pathology department that undertook the blood test but if you could email our Patient Advice and Liaison Service with more information we can look into it.

Our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) is available to listen to concerns, suggestions or queries and can help sort out problems quickly on your behalf. You can contact PALS by telephone on 01737 231958, email: pals@sash.nhs.uk, or by writing to: PALS, East Surrey Hospital, Canada Avenue, Redhill, Surrey RH1 5RH.
