I have just been discharged from a General Surgery Ward on a very busy and unusually hot August Bank Holiday. Having been referred to Macclesfield with acute abdominal pains once I saw a doctor, I was allocated a bed, made comfortable, given pain relief, liquids, antibiotics and as importantly sympathy and care. I was scanned the same evening and correctly diagnosed the next morning. All the staff I encountered treated me with the correct mix of dignity, sympathy and humor; nothing was too much trouble and every task performed seemed to be carried out quickly, professionally and to the best of their ability. If I were to single out any staff who went above and beyond the call of duty it would be the porters and the staff manning the discharge lounge, in particular the porter who ran out to the car park and then ran back to ward to collect my medication that had mistakenly been sent back to ward 2. It was clear to me that the every member of staff was under tremendous pressure given the sheer number of patients the hospital was obliged to treat, and the general lack of resources available to the hospital in terms of buildings, beds, staff and equipment. I will be writing to both David Rutley MP and Fiona Bruce MP to pass on my experience this weekend both in terms of the superb level of care I received, and on my perception of the effect a lack of resources has on dedicated staff who want to do their job well. Thank you.
"Amazing care on a Bank Holiday weekend"
