"midwifes handovers not done properly"

About: Queen's Hospital / Maternity care

I went to the labour triage with irregular contractions which were 7-10 mins apart, i was in extreme pain unable to walk or lie down. The midwifes gave me a sarcastic look as if i was exaggerating my situation and insisted I lie down and give them a urine sample. I would if I could. They just let me be in pain until a senior midwife showed up and gave me gas and air option, thank god for this, i was able to atleast lie down and i was already 9 cm dilated. Just because my contractions were not 5-3 mins apart dosent mean the pain wasn’t real, I expected the midwifes to have enough knowledge and expertise to asses and offer different options quickly rather than make me feel helpless for a while. I was rushed immediately to the labour ward as my water broke during the check up and baby had pooed in the womb. After the delivery I had to stay in the labour ward overnight and could see that the day and night midwifes dont do handovers very well as the night midwifes in labour ward lack information of what happened in the day. Also the night midwifes are grumpy and in a rush, there was a particular midwife who always said she will come in a minute but never returned to help, had to ask someone else then.

Thank you for sharing your experience, I am so sorry to hear that the care given to you was not what I would have expected.

Every woman attending the unit should be assessed appropriately and the staff need to understand that women all labour differently.

I would welcome you to contact Denise Gray on Denise.gray2@nhs.net ( labour ward matron), or myself so that we are able to identify the staff giving you the care, so that they can made of aware of how non-verbal communication, affects women coming to our service and this will prevent another person having the same experience as you.

Congratulations on the birth of your baby.

Kind regards

Sue Lovell
