"My experience during CBT in mental health services."

About: Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust / Early intervention in psychosis service (EIP) (Limbrick)

(as a service user),

I was receiving CBT under the early intervention service (mental health) as I was suffering from psychosis, and I was suicidal, my psychologist Nate was fantastic.

After a few sessions he recognised I would need more than the allocated 15. I presume he seeked permission to grant me extra, I was given 30, double the allowance, but it was needed as I was sexually abused and neglected as a child and this obviously impacted on my mental health. I had so much I needed to speak about, knowing I had the extra sessions really helped me to relax during therapy and allowed me to open up more than I ever thought I would. I was in complete denial about my abuse and felt nothing about it. Nate helped me to realise I WAS abused and what happened to me was wrong. We did trauma work and visited the house where the abuse happened, I feel Nate went the extra mile for me and thoroughly deserves recognition as without him i wouldn't be as well as I am today, looking forward to my future and happy to be alive. My experience with Nate was fantastic but at times I yearned for sympathetic contact, a hug or a arm around me or someone even holding my hand would have made a difference to me, especially while visiting the place of abuse and speaking about distressing memories.

Having someone to speak to straight after a session, maybe have a cup of tea with would have been helpful too, instead of having to slip straight back to normal life after being so upset.

Dear tucanaqx44

Many thanks for taking the time to share your views on Care Opinion, its always really positive to get feedback about a member of the team and it appears that the hard work you've done with Nate has been of benefit to you. I'm aware from talking with Nate that you are looking to attend the peer group that Early Intervention Service are facilitating - it would be good if you were willing to share your experiences, especially those around your feelings and needs after the sessions in this group as it will allow us to shape the future services offered to the individuals we support.

All the best for the future

Stacey
