"Ward 36 staff - Simply Outstanding"

About: University Hospital Of North Tees / General medicine

Following an emergency admission, I had what can only be described as the ‘honour’ of being accommodated on Ward 36. I was very unwell, when I arrived, HAD to lay flat (due to my condition) & my eyes had to be covered due to extreme light sensitivity. This had been terribly disorientating all day but I was greeted that night with such warmth, calm & tenderness by a wonderful Staff Nurse. I was given a buzzer to call for ANY help plus a lovely HCA introduced himself, saying he’d be sat in the bay ALL NIGHT giving 1:1 care to another patient & to just call his name if I needed ‘anything’. I couldn’t have wished to feel safer or more secure whilst feeling so unwell & in a vulnerable position/predicament. Nothing was too much trouble for qualified staff, HCA’s or ancillary staff. Not an eyelid was batted, when they wanted to routinely change my sheets. I explained I HAD to lay flat & immediately I was offered (& accepted with delight) THE most professional, dignified, caring & refreshing bed bath. Having been poorly at home, in bed, for almost 1wk it felt absolutely wonderful. The ward is immaculately clean & the floor cleaner had a reassuring very clean ‘bleachy’ odour to it - unlike some sprays & buffing machines. We had cause to ask a member of ancillary staff to check the facilities as a patient found them ‘concerning’. Without hesitation the toilet area was coned off, emptied, bleached thoroughly & mopped within 1” of its life! A member of the catering team recognised my special dietary requirements & went out of her way to find me something suitable to eat from elsewhere in the hospital. The staff on Ward 36 are a fantastic blend of true team work. They’re professional, kind, caring, friendly, welcoming & will try their level best to put even the most ill patients at ease or as comfortable as they can. I’ll never forget their tremendous kindness to me, when I REALLY needed it.
