"Unhappy with visit to West Mendip Hospital"

About: West Mendip Community Hospital

(as the patient),

I went there to West Mendip Hospital to have a foot X-ray last week.

I had to remove a dry dressing on my ulcerated toe first (why? - X-rays can penetrate clothing) and afterwards was sent to Minor Injuries Unit. I was informed that they had no record of me on the database although I was there a few weeks earlier. No wonder people complain about inefficiency in the NHS - there seems to be no joined up thinking.

The next time I need a dressing, I will purchase some plasters from the nearest supermarket and apply them myself.

What is needed is the patient's observations to be noted.

Response from Karen Howard-Grenville, PALS, Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

Dear alandbailey

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience on the Patient Opinion website, and giving Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust the opportunity to respond to your posting.

Firstly, although you received the treatment at the West Mendip Community Hospital which is part of this Trust, the x-ray services are actually provided by Taunton & Somerset Trust, (Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton). I have therefore been in touch with the appropriate clinical manager for the Diagnostic Imaging service, who has sent me the following response which was provided by the radiographer that completed the examination.

'The X-ray was specifically looking for osteomyelitis which has a very subtle appearance on X-rays and can easily be obscured by artefacts such as dressings. In this case it was entirely appropriate to remove the dressing and then send the patient to MIU for a new dressing'.

I hope that the above response is satisfactory to you, however, should you wish to discuss it further, please contact Taunton & Somerset Trust, Patient Advice & Liaison Service, PALS, who will be able to help you further. The contact telephone number is 01823 344762.
