"Empathy and basic care"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / General Medicine (Wards 3, 4, 5 &46)

(as a parent/guardian),

She had a lumber puncture   , was sent home but got worse because of a bad reaction that meant severe pain sickness and nausea. In acute ass the staff are very busy with a 3 hour wait luckily we were taken into a room and had some basic treatment, everything takes ages here, waiting over an hour for an anti sickness tablet/jag. Yes they are so busy but there is constant chit chat and banter going on between the staff, but all in all staff here were helpful caring and pleasant. She was moved upstairs to glasgow royal infirmary ward 51 which is a well staffed busy receiving ward. I have never came across nurses who have no empathy and seem unable or unwilling to deliver basic care. My daughter couldn’t really sit up as that made her sick. When her medication was brought to her It was put down on her table, she wasn’t offered any help to sit up or even offered a glass with water in it. When she buzzed to get the drip removed to go to the toilet they did exactly that dropped the tube and walked away nobody said do you need a hand to walk in or sit up, at one point a nurse came with her tablet in her hand, not in a wee cup, just held in her sweaty germ ridden hand and handed it to her, again no assistance offered or drink offered. I said I’m not sure if she has to continue with this tablet as this might be causing nausea her reply was “well don’t take it if you don’t want, it’s up to you but you won’t get anything else”. I had to ask for a clean sheet to change the bed, 2 nurses came with no sense of urgency and continued their conversation throughout.  I was hoping to speak to the ward manager but as soon as she managed to eat a small bit of food she got thrown out. Dumped in a chair to wait for someone to pick her up, luckily I could go quickly to get her. To honest I think some of the staff we came into contact with need to be educated in compassion, empathy and basic civility.

Dear Patientmum,

I was really sorry and disappointed to hear of you and your daughter's recent experience of care within ward 51, Glasgow Royal Infirmary (GRI). Please accept my apologies for this as this is far removed from the standards of care we strive to deliver to our patients across all wards within the GRI.

I would like to investigate this further and would be grateful if you are able to confirm your daughter's details and the date/time of her admission to ward 51. My personal telephone number is 07900678367.

Once again I am sorry that your experience was such a negative one and I would like to thank you for taking the time to highlight your concerns.

Yours sincerely,

John Stuart

Chief Nurse.
