"Dr Appointment"

About: Alpine House Surgery

I had an appointment with a particular doctor. I felt that he talked over me and didn't let me present my concerns/symptoms properly.

In short he doesn't appear to listen.

The appointment was not a discussion, it was a monologue.

As a result, I suspect he has sent me off for further checks that I have already had and I do not expect to have my symptoms diagnosed correctly and the right course of treatment put in place.

I have no confidence in his ability to understand what is troubling me as a patient.

He needs to slow, down, listen and understand.

I feel that I have been machine gunned with words and will not select an appointment with this Dr again.

Many thanks for your comment, I have spoken to all of our Drs regarding your comment and discussed it as a learning point. We all agree that seeing numerous different Drs for the same problem is neither helpful nor productive for both patients and the Dr. Different opinions can lead to alternative conclusions and additional investigations with the added pressure of not missing anything more serious. We discussed how we can make positive changes to ensure patients and Drs are given more time so that patients can feel more supported and listened to. Our conclusion was that the walk in clinics, although helpful for a lot of patients, were becoming more onerous with increased waiting times, increased pressure on consultations and poor continuity of care. Hence to address this, we have now returned to a booked appointment system and are looking at ways to improve continuity of care for patients such as assigning key workers to our most vulnerable patients and meeting more regularly with clinical teams to discuss case studies. All patients are of course free to see any Dr of their choosing and we do try to encourage patients to see the same Dr for the same illness. If you would like to discuss anything further with me, I would be happy to contact you directly by telephone or arrange a face to face meeting. Please contact me using the email address alpine.house@nhs.net
