I'm 76 and I have asthma and COPD - which I knew very little about beyond the way they affected me. I was recommended to this service by my General Practise (GP) and I'm so grateful that they did. I learned a considerable amount about my condition - mostly reassuring - from the initial assessment and agreed to participate in the programme. After an initial physical assessment, I began a 6 week course of two, two hour sessions per week. Each session comprised of roughly 90 minutes on a circuit of seven exercises, each completed as best I could, followed by a 30 minute information, question and answer session which covered everything I ever wanted to know about COPD. The final session ended with what was essentially the same physical assessment that I'd completed at the start and my continuing, personal exercise programme was discussed. Later I received a note, copied to my GP showing how my physical ability and knowledge had changed (thankfully improved). I cannot but praise the programme staff for their dedication, patience, kindness and help. I only wish I'd known about the programme five years ago when I was first diagnosed with COPD. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone, of any age with either illnesses.
