"Leaving hospital with an open wound and no dressing applied"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Plastic Surgery & Burns (wards 45, 47, 48 & 49)

(as a service user),

Attended gri ward 49 July 19, for full thickness skin graft to nose. Care excellent and staff very engaging. However, I was told I could not drive home due to local anaesthetic and proceeded to go home via public transport. I had no dressing applied to this area and my wound started to bleed whilst on public transport with no tissues handy. Not great having some bleeding next to you with no advice to have tissues with you. My nose continued to bleed and was concerned I had no dressing as I was worried about infection and being exposed to air pollution. I attended my follow up in RAH today, to be informed they had never known an iodine dressing not to be insitu. As wound had obviously bled into the graft I will be reviewed again on Thursday.

I would be concerned about patients being discharged with full skin graft wound with no dressing applied for the many reasons mentioned. Look forward to hearing what patients should expect in terms of a dressing when travelling home.

Dear Mkm19,

I was very sorry to read your feedback in relation to your lack of discharge advice and dressings and the upset this clearly caused you. Patients should normally be given individual post operative advice and provided with wound swabs in the case of any bleeding.

There are patients who have wounds left exposed for specific reasons and we would be keen to assist you and understand your particular case. Please could you contact Nicole McInally from the patient experience team either at Nicole.McInally@ggc.scot.nhs.uk or on 0141 201 0309 and provide contact details and we will be able to follow this up for you. Please accept our sincere apologies again for this experience.

Regards
