What I liked
A team of health care professionals who were so clearly dedicated to help patients recover. I was treated with great respect throughout. The nurses were attentive and helpful. The lesser heralded but equally important physios and pharmacists were a model of professional care and concern. Consultant ward rounds on a Sunday and Bank Holiday - how refreshing!
I even liked the food which during my 10 day stay was nutritious and piping hot - always.
What could be improved
Pain control during the first 12 hours of admission in MAU. Small doses of opiates for big fellas were clearly and observably inadequate. A patient who had to stand up for 8 hours throughout the night because pain made sitting or lying impossible should have suggested that pain control was inadequate.
Compared to the rest of my treatment, this was a slight blip in an otherwise good experience.
Anything else?
The Churchill represents all that is good about the NHS - great and effective treatment delivered in a pleasant environment by healthcare professionals who genuinely care
