"MAU Ward Stay"

About: Royal Gwent Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

I was kept in for pleurisy and was in a hell  lot of pain and given morphine

I arrived at 2pm in the afternoon and was told they lost my bloods so they had to be retaken and then they did not have a bed for me until 3am. I was in so much pain and tired they put me in a bed in resus to try and let me sleep this was never going to happen but instead heard someone pass away.

The first night I was freezing I was told by the nurses the air con comes and no one know how to sort it there was a lot of patients complaining of the same I asked for another blank and was not got one despite asking on 3 occasions in the end I had to use my jacket to try and keep warm as the cold was making my chest pain worse.

I had to beg nurses for pain relief despite being in agony and the doctor changing my medication to stronger dose. They continued to tell me they would sort it in a minute.

It got so bad I had to use medication that I brought in my handbag as I was rolling around the bed in pain and being ignored.

Then at dinner time the nurses come around asking all patients what they would like for the dinner menu. I see some patients receive there's and thought mine was on the way after over a half an hour wait and peoples plate being collected. I called over the nurse to ask if mine would be ready and they insisted I had it despite there being no tray etc.

I had to argue with 2 further nurses and another patient confirmed that I had no had none and was then told that it was too late and they would try and get me a cold sandwich. But this couldn't be guaranteed. To my complete shock this never arrived and I was left with out food even though I was clearly in no position to get some myself and no family members was able to visit/

The second night was just as cold and stressful with staff ignoring patients call for help and to busy talking loudly and using their phones. This made to sleep with the noise and cold. I then called a nurse for some medication and was told they were busy and all I do is want, want, want..

I was requested to stay in another night but I was so uncomfortable and not getting the care I needed that I persuaded the doctor to send me home to my partner and 2 kids and that.. despite having kids would be more restful and medication would be better managed. But agreed if I had any further symptoms to return.

I have just moved to wales and was shocked of the treatment I received I can only hope this is a one off. but my aunt has stayed in previously on further occasions and the biggest complaint is how COLD it is due to the air con.
